A Sustainable Future for Theological Training in Vanuatu

Building self-sustaining accommodation that funds the training of future pastors and Christian leaders.

Thank you for considering our future and for exploring the way to get this project off the ground – to keep providing ongoing funding support to the Institute.

The Challenge

For over 35 years Talua Theological Training Institute has prepared pastors, evangelists, teachers and Christian leaders to serve throughout Vanuatu.

Yet theological education in the Pacific remains heavily dependent upon overseas funding.

As Talua expands from a single campus to a national network of training centres, the need for a sustainable financial foundation has become increasingly urgent.

A Different Kind of Project

Most fundraising builds something that immediately requires more funding.

The Reefside Project is different.

Every dollar invested creates a long-term income stream that helps fund theological education for generations.

Located on Talua’s spectacular South Santo campus, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by coral reefs, the Reefside Project will provide quality guest accommodation for:

  • Mission teams
  • Church groups
  • International tourists
  • Volunteers
  • Academic visitors

All profit generated will directly support the training of Christian leaders across the Pacific.

Why Tourism? Why now?

The South Santo campus sits on one of the most beautiful locations in Vanuatu.

Guests enjoy:

✓ Panoramic ocean views

✓ Coral reef at their doorstep

✓ Authentic village-like culture

✓ Easy cccess to one of the fastest-growing tourism regions in Vanuatu

✓ A unique opportunity to support Christian leadership development while they stay.

The imminent completion of the sealed South Santo Road creates a significant opportunity for Talua to develop sustainable tourism income.

Proof of Concept

The Reefside Project is not a speculative idea! Before any purpose-built accommodation has been constructed, Talua has already demonstrated that visitors are willing to stay on campus and pay for quality accommodation.

Using only existing houses, minimal advertising, and operating on a challenging road before its sealing, Talua began welcoming guests, mission teams, and visitors to South Santo. The response exceeded expectations.

In 2024, accommodation income was over $3,000 AUD.

In 2025, Talua generated approximately $9,200 AUD in revenue through its Guest Project. This was achieved using existing facilities, with virtually no marketing, no dedicated tourism infrastructure, and before the completion of the sealed South Santo Road.

Looking Ahead

Talua’s long-term projections suggest that a single purpose-built guest duplex with sweeping ocean views operating at only modest occupancy levels could generate approximately 2 million vatu ($25,000) of annual profit for Talua’s theological education and ministry training.

With two or three duplexes, and strong management and marketing, profit could well exceed 3 times this amount!

And remember – all of this money will go directly to funding the training of the next generation of Christ-centred leaders!

The Reefside Master Plan

The Talua Team has a carefully planned phased strategy to create Reefside. Each stage builds upon the previous one, gradually transforming the lower area of the grounds into a thriving guest village that helps fund Talua.

Step 1: Staff House & Laundry

The first stage is the construction of a Staff House for the Reefside Project Manager together with a guest laundry.

This dedicated facility will provide on-site management for guest services, maintenance, housekeeping, and future development of the project.

Status: Staff House funded. Laundry facilities still required.

Step 2: Guest Duplex A

The second stage is the construction of the first purpose-built guest duplex.

This building will provide two comfortable guest suites overlooking the South Santo coastline, offering visitors a peaceful place to rest, work, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Each suite includes a private ensuite, workspace, and outdoor sitting area, creating accommodation suitable for tourists, mission teams, ministry partners, and retreat guests.

We praise God that this duplex is already fully funded! Construction is ongoing, and it should be ready to open in February 2027.

Step 3: Kitchen & Dining Room

The third stage is the development of a communal dining kitchen and hospitality area.

This shared space offers a full kitchen for self-catering, or a welcoming environment for fellowship, ministry teams, and retreat groups to eat together.

Steps 4: Bunk Dorms & Conference Room

The fourth stage is the construction of a series of comfortable bunk rooms designed for larger groups, along with a purpose-built Conference Room.

Together, these will provide affordable, flexible accommodation for youth groups, young adult mission teams, conference attendees, church retreats, school groups, and volunteer teams. Shared amenities and a communal outdoor space will create an ideal environment for fellowship, discipleship, and team building, while allowing larger groups to stay together in one location. With a Conference Room nearby, with spectular Oceanview Vistas, we pray it will be a very special space for groups to grow together in their love and knowledge of the Lord.

Steps 5 & 6: Expansion of the Village

The next stage is the addition of two further guest houses.

Ongoing throughout:

Landscaping is ongoing, and will play an important role in creating a welcoming environment for guests, enhancing the natural beauty of the site

Unlike many building projects, each stage of the Reefside Master Plan contributes toward a self-sustaining future. As accommodation capacity increases, so too does the project’s ability to generate income that supports Talua’s mission of equipping Christian leaders throughout Vanuatu and the Pacific.

For more than 35 years, Talua Theological Training Institute has been preparing pastors, evangelists, teachers, chaplains, and Christian leaders to serve churches throughout Vanuatu and the wider Pacific.

As we look to the future, we don’t only want to sustain this ministry, but expand it! We want to see Talua become increasingly sustainable, enabling future generations of students to receive quality theological education without relying solely on overseas support.

The Reefside Project is an important part of that vision. Every guest who stays at Reefside will contribute to something much bigger than accommodation. Their stay will help support the training of future Christian leaders who will serve churches and communities throughout Vanuatu.

Reefside is an investment in gospel ministry.

Reefside is an investment in future pastors and church leaders.

Reefside is an investment in the growth of Christ’s church across the Pacific.

We invite you to partner with us in this exciting vision.
Together, we can create a sustainable future for theological education in Vanuatu.

“To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations, for ever and ever. Amen.”
